The Desert Inn.Coffman’s vision was to open an oasis in the desert for people to come on holiday. With only $2,000 she realized her dream by building fabric-covered, wood-framed buildings called “tent houses.” When it opened it was only 75 feet long on Main Street and went only 290 feet west toward the mountain. This sprawling Rancho Mirage estate was built in 1957 for legendary “White Christmas” crooner Bing Crosby. A spectacular pebble tech pool and spa with adjacent fire pits serve as a splendid centerpiece from nearly every room in this celebrity estate. When I returned home later that day, I did further research and was able to verify that the Ironwood house was indeed the correct spot. As you can see below, the sprawling residence is definitely Spanish in style.
Crosby only lived at the Rancho Mirage home for a few years, before he moved to another house he had built in nearby Palm Desert. By December 2021, the estate had been relisted with new representation, with Compass’ David Emerson and Alejandra Trejo in charge of finding the right buyer. By May 2020, the celebrity home was taken off the market, failing to attract a buyer even after a series of price cuts. Other notable celebrities of the times like Ginger Rogers, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnez all had homes nearby. Bing Crosby’s estate was last listed in December 2021 with new representation .

The Douglas home was also used as a location set for the 1971 James Bond film Diamonds Are Forever, starring Sean Connery and Jill St. John.

You can check out a 1960s-era photograph of both Bing and Van Heusen’s properties here. As the story goes — according to Monroe’s biographer — the two stayed at Crosby’s house at the same time, with many speculating that this is the place where their rumored love connection may have blossomed. The midcentury modern home built in the 1950s by one of America’s most popular entertainers of all time has been bouncing on and off the market for the past decade. According to the listing, there was a major remodel in 2014, including the kitchen, pantry, mud room, laundry room and bathrooms. "It was a visceral reaction," current owner Suzanne Roche said, recalling the time she first stepped inside the 9,875 square foot residence. "I walked in and stood in the foyer and fell in love with it immediately."
"Post-divorce, the house is just too much for one person," Roche said. It's also the current owner's favorite spot of the house, where she has hosted large gatherings and private concerts. It opens to reveal what the owners refer to as a "speakeasy" — a room with a bench, windows and a bar cart. "As the story goes, Bing had just finished a round of golf in Hillsborough when he was approached by the original owners and spontaneously invited to see the home," Oliva told CNBC. "As soon as Bing saw the grand foyer with the wide oak staircase and glass lead picture window … he bought it on the spot."

According to Page Six, the house in Rancho Mirage was built specifically for the crooner in 1957. It boasts 5 bedrooms and 5.5 bathrooms within a 6,700-square-foot floor plan, but that might not be as interesting as hearing about the VIPs who stopped in. Whether it’s fact or fiction may never be determined, but the guest casita is said to have been a place where John F. Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe rendezvoused. Casa Elizabeth. The house dubbed “Casa Elizabeth” contains 4 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms, is available for rent and prices range from $560 to $1250 a night depending on the time of year.
